                 And General Assembly

         Meet in San Juan Puerto Rice    

The General Assembly of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations, invited by the Colegio de Ingenieros Agrimensores de Puerto Rico (CIAPR) met in San Juan on October 19 ana 20, 2005 ending a week devoted to engineering and engineers.

Several events prepared this meeting during the first days the week:

  • The six Standing Committees reviewed their activities during the current year and discussed their programmes to be launched next year.

  • The Executive Council received their reports as well as those of the Task Forces and International Members and prepared the recommendations for the General Assembly. It also received the report of the WEC 2008 International Advisory Board.

Simultaneously, CIAPR had organized a Technical Congress on Small Island Sustainable Development gathering representatives from many countries as weil as a Forum on Overpowering Corruption - A path for the Professional Engineers.

The WFEO General Assembly was opened by President Yee Lee Cheong.

It took in particularthe following decisions:

  • It approved the audited accounts for 2003 and 2004 and confirmed the budgets for 2006 and 2007.

  • It welcomed the new members who had submitted membership applications such as the engineering organizations of the Dominican Republic, Senegal and Singapore in addition to those members who decided to resume relations with the Federation such as Canada, Ghana and Philippines.

  • It accepted the proposal from the Polish Federation Engineering Associations to take over the Committee on Education (CET).

It accepted the proposal from the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies to take over the Committee on Information and Communication (CIC).

It acknowledged the award of the WFEO Medal of Engineering Excellence to Dr. C. C. Patel (India), the Medal of Excellence in Engineering Education to Dr. Ramachandran (India) and the Hassib Sabbagh Award for Engineering Construction to Engineers without Borders USA.

It also acknowledged the award of the medals for outstanding services to Mrs. Qian Yi, and Messrs. Jose Medem, Janos Ginsztler and G. P. Lal.

It elected as President Elect Mr. Barry Grear (Australia).

It elected or re-elected as representatives of National Members in the Executive Council, Messrs. S. Aoun (Lebanon), P.Greenwood (Australia), C. Ballester (Argentina), L. Lerner (Brazil), A. Gava (Italy), M. Mihaita (Rumania), J.C- Badoux (Switzerland).It accepted with thanks the invitation of the American Society of Civil Engineers to hold the next 2006 Executive Council meeting in Chicago.

It accepted with thanks the invitation of the Institution of Engineers (India) to hold the next 2007 General Assembly in Delhi.

The activities and projects of the Federation were debated including the updating of the Strategic Plan, the involvement of WFEO in WSIS and other.

The end of the General Assembly, President Lee Yee Cheong passed the presidency to Mr. Kamel Ayadi who thanked alt participants and called for the co-operation and efforts of all members to help build a strong and efficient Federation to the benefit of all engineers. He then presided the new Executive Council and allocated the tasks to the various Council members.
