World Council of Civil Engineers Created

Civil Engineers represent a majority in Engineering Organisations at national, regional and international level. Civil Engineers in their role as professionals, managing the built and natural environment, have a crucial influence on the lives of people globally.

The challenges to public safety, health and welfare are becoming more demanding. It is therefore essential to promote high ethical and technical standards of civil engineering worldwide and also to encourage the exchange and transferof knowledge and technological advancement. Consequently, the European Council of Civil Engineers ECCE), during it’s general assembly meeting in Athens in 2002 proposed the concept of a global civil engineering body in order to foster co-operation between organisations of Cvil Engineers and between organisations within Civil Engineering world wide.

Following lengthy debates and analysis of the WCCE proposal, an ad-hoc ECCE working group prepared a draft document on the creation of a World Council of Civil    Engineers. This document was discussed formally by ECCE members and distributed to civil engineering organisations around the world for their attention.

On the 13th November 2005, an international meeting was summoned in Istanbul following ECCE’s general assembly. The 15 civil engineering organisations present, from Europe and America, decided to create the World Council of Civil Engineers.

WCCE proposes to work closely with other international organisations such as WFEO. The cooperation between both bodies will benefit the engineering profession on all continents.

The official founding event of WCCE is scheduled to take place in July 2006 and all national, regional and international Civil Engineering Organisations or affiliated branches worldwide interested in participating are cordially invited and welcome to join in this event.
